OUR HISTORY
The Pennsylvania Society of Chaplains has a long history in supporting chaplains. In May of 1976 a group of Chaplains from the Harrisburg area, focused on Hospital chaplaincy organized what was known as HAP (Hospital Association of Pennsylvania).
During the history of HAP other professional Chaplaincy organizations the "National Association of Catholic Chaplains" and the "Association of Professional Chaplains" would join in holding what was then called retreats and later became known as the conferences held in the spring and fall.
These conferences are a tradition that continues today at the Bongiorno Conference Center in Carlisle, PA. It is the hope that both fall and spring gatherings have provided renewal of spirit and mind, continuing education credits, fellowship and worship. Just recently (2019) with the many changes to healthcare, fewer chaplains, less time available for continuing education we have voted to go to one annual conference.
Our name “The PA Society of Chaplains, Inc” was established in 2002 upon the disbanding of the previous association. We focus on Advocacy, Networking, and Education. As advocates we provide information regarding chaplaincy and promoting the growth of pastoral care in healthcare facilities. As to networking, we maintain contact with one another providing support, sharing information, ideas, and encouragement. As to education we now have a four day conference that provides an opportunity for chaplains to attend seminars, hear keynote speakers, and learn about topics that affect and effect chaplaincy in today’s world.
Come join us as together we build relationships having time for renewal, education, spiritual support and conversations around meals that promote chaplaincy in all its forms and systems.
